A Girl's Day Out!
add a comment | talkOur girls work very hard with school, skills and participate in classes, counseling, and much more. They don't leave the house much other than church and doctor's visits.
Maureen felt like they needed a girl's day out.
Each girl was given a small allowance at the used clothing market to pick out something they needed. It was a great lesson on bargaining and budgeting!

They ended the day out with a very rare treat: pizza and coke!

The girls were happy to show off their bargains:

Compassion Kenya Blesses Mercy House
add a comment | talkLife in Africa is hard. Meal preparation and cleaning is a long process without modern conveniences. Laundry takes hours, leaving your hands red and raw. Add in pregnancy and teens and exhaustion, homeschool and many classes and weekly chores can be a burden. They are necessary and our girls don't complain much, but work is still work.
A few weeks ago, students from LDP, Compassion's Leadership Development Program visited and took over chores for an entire Saturday! It was a huge blessing. The girls also enjoyed visiting with the LDP students who were a source of encouragement and offered great fellowship.

Maureen, our Kenyan Executive Director graduated from Compassion's Leadership Development Program and was invited to Tanzania last week to speak on behalf of Mercy House and Compassion.
We are so thankful for their support of our work.

Mercy House Donors Bless Slum School
add a comment | talkWhen we wrote about our first Community Outreach to the school in the heart of a Nairobi slum, several of you were moved to give to this school and others wanted to sponsor another outreach. Maureen asked the principal what the school needed most and he said books.

Mercy House added some money to make it an even $1000 and look what we were able to purchase!

Maureen said the volunteer teachers were nearly as excited as the children! To have a resource to teach from and to help their students reach their potential.
Mercy House is honored to partner with this school and bless their nearly 400 students.

2nd Mercy Benefit Day: Nov. 7
add a comment | talkOn November 7, 2011, I will be hosting our 2nd Silent Auction to benefit Mercy House. And we need YOUR help!
How it will work: In increments of 30 minutes, all day long, we will publish a new item up for auction. If you want to bid, you will leave a comment with your bid amount. Each comment is a bid, with the last comment being the winner–just like a silent auction. The Benefit Day will end at 11 pm CST on November, 10th.
Donate an Item: This is a fabulous way to get FREE ADVERTISING for your store or product and your own post write-up with links (and support a great cause)! All the cool kids are doing it! We will limit the auction to around 30 items (
2514 spots left as of now), they must be a minimum of $75 in value. Please send your interest to mercyhousekenya@gmail.com (Once approved, you will need to send a picture(s), item description, value and mail item(s) to winner).Highest Bidders: Will be announced in a new blog post and invoiced via Paypal.

All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the new counseling department of The Mercy House. We recognize the need for intensive one on one therapy for each of our pregnant girls and have hired a qualified counselor to do so. Monthly cost is a minimum of $250 (goes up with each girl). We are hoping this Benefit Auction will pay for the entire 2012 year! Your non-cash donation is tax deductible if you request a receipt!
Special thanks to the two amazing friends who are heading up the Mercy Benefit Day: Eryn of Mama Hall and Jamie of Six Bricks High, my volunteer virtual assistant. You girls are a blessing to me!

So Much to Be Thankful For...
add a comment | talkThank you for praying for our sweet Kenyan family. Please don't stop! God has done some beautiful things in the past week that involve healing and restoration. Maureen is doing much better as is Sarah. We were able to hire a qualified Christian counselor who spends hours with the girls each week in individual and group therapy.
We have prayed that our girls would begin seeing each other like family (especially since some of our girls don't have any) and God like their Father. Slowly but surely we are seeing a transformation.
Our next baby is due in just a few weeks, please pray that everything goes well.
Thank you so much for sharing this burden with us!
