Before our girls come to The Mercy House, they are young girls on the brink of motherhood in one of the most dangerous and desperate areas of the world. With little to no help or support available, they face a bleak and uncertain future. Our first priority is to give our girls safety, love, and hope for the future, but we never forget or negate their past.

Twice a year, we invite the girls' extended families to visit The Mercy House. Each girl is allowed to invite two family members, and, while many of them don't have fathers or mothers, there is almost always a sister or an aunt or a former teacher that comes to visit. We recently held our second Family Visitation Day, and each girl had a family member present.

Family Visitation Day is a very special time of celebration when the girls are able to show off their beautiful babies and tell about all they've learned at The Mercy House. We sing. We laugh. We share testimonies. The day is a beautiful example of God's love and hope for the families.

One of our goals for Family Visitation Day is to offer the extended family an opportunity to learn and grow alongside the girls. This time, we invited a specialist to teach about the effects of abuse. Our prayer is that The Mercy House will be a city on a hill...a light for these families to see how much God loves them.

Many of the family members arrive at the house with hungry stomachs. One of the ways we share God's love is to fill their stomachs and share a big, traditional Kenyan meal together. Maureen, the staff, and the girls worked hard to prepare the meal, complete with rice, Murenda (traditional vegetables), meat, and Ugali (Kenyan "bread" used instead of utensils).

A familiar scripture is displayed on the dining room wall. Can you see it?

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD,
"plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you a hope and a future."

The Mercy House exists to act justly. to love mercy. and to walk humbly with our God. We believe that Family Visitation Days are an important part of that mission. To feed the hungry, both physically and spiritually. To give them a living and breathing example of the good plans the LORD has for them and their family. To serve them as guests in our home. We are honored to host these days of hope.

With high blood pressure and one week overdue, Lucy was induced. After 24 grueling hours, she delivered a beautiful, healthy son via c-section. 

His name is Duncan:

Lucy impressed the hospital staff with her mothering heart and leadership qualities. She is a blessing in our home!

Welcome to our 4th boy and 6th baby!

At 3:00 AM, April,2, 2012, a fire broke out at the maternity home.  

Thankfully everyone got out of the house and the fire was contained to one bedroom.

One of our young moms woke up to feed her baby. The electricity was off and it was pitch black in the house. She lit a candle to see, but fell asleep with it lit next to her bed. It's very common for homes use candles when there isn't electricity (we will be coming up with a better solution), although we don't normally use them at night.

She awoke to flames near her back and over her head, her tiny baby snuggled up next to her body. The girls screamed and Maureen sent them downstairs and outside with their babies. She grabbed a blanket to beat the fire, but it caught on fire. Our other staff grabbed buckets of water and were able to help her get the fire put out.

Maureen, Annette (our housemother) and Zacheeus (night guard) beat the fire that had lit up the mattress, wall and curtains. Other than some smoke inhalation and some blisters, everyone is fine.

The doctor gave them inhalers. The babies were checked out. We are so thankful to God for protecting our family in Kenya.

Please pray for health and that we can repair the room back to it's original condition.

Maureen said, "We are grateful to our Almighty daddy, the protector of all creation and one who is stronger than any other God. I surely saw the hand of God, He is the most High and the only God that I know.  I am also so grateful to those who sacrificed a minute to lift us before God. We love you so much!"

Updated: Maureen stepped on thorns the night of the fire and has swollen foot and burned hand, please pray for a quick recovery. Also, Lucy is due any day with our sixth baby, please keep her in your prayers.

Mercy House Spring Collection Drive: Paperback non-fiction books!

We are collecting books to build a "library" at the maternity home. Besides Jesus, education is the key to our girls' future success. Most of our girls are below level (some primary), and we want to instill in them a deep love for reading.

We are collecting non-fiction books (only paperback due to weight) on all things science, art, picture books, etc. to fill our homeschool library (Fiction like Laura Ingalls Wilder book is also acceptable). If you'd like to participate, please mail to:
