Our Battle Isn't Against Flesh and Blood

We are asking for you to join us in fasting and prayer for our girls at Mercy (Rehema) House.  There has been a lot of spiritual warfare lately and they need us to stand in the gap. Please consider joining us and praying that God would protect our girls, our unborn and newborn, as well as our staff.

Many of the girls come from very challenging backgrounds and their mind is a battlefield. They have been used and abused by the world in unimaginable ways. But we know this battle isn't against flesh and blood.

    Pray specifically for:

    • Physical Healing-Maureen, Exec. Dir, has been ill, but is doing a lot better. She has been fighting infection in her body and Sarah, our newest girl is still hospitalized for private reasons.
    • Emotional healing from abuse
    • Fear-some of our girls are having bad dreams
    • Protection
    • Oppression to be removed
    • Releasing their burdens to Christ and growing in a relationship with Him
    • Financial-God has continued to meet every need. Please pray that He will continue to provide, so we can help more girls
    • Encouragement for our staff
From the beginning, we've acknowledged we can't do any of this alone. You are on our team. We appreciate you praying and believing with us.
    Thank you!

    And A School is Born

Education in Kenya is a privilege, not a guarantee. Our girls are so thankful to have Science, English, Math and Bible lessons and homework. They love to learn and are doing great in their studies!

Please pray for Maureen (a degreed teacher in Kenya) and for the girls as they continue learning!

    Our Miraculous Community Development Outreach

Our first outreach was held in a neighboring slum school. Children must pay to go to even public school in Nairobi and for those who are very poor, education is an extra sometimes. God spoke to Maureen about helping a school that is run solely by volunteer college students who teach 350 children all day long, right through lunch because the kids don't have food.

Our staff gave with sacrifice, each from their own pockets and added to our $175 budgeted amount for the outreach. With the money, they gave toilet paper, sanitary towels, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes (donated by a Kenyan board member), charcoal for cooking, rice, cooking oil, pens, pencils and notebooks.

The also prepared food for 350 children (no small task) and set out to serve the kids on Friday last week.

And this is where the story turns miraculous! Instead of 350 children, 750 showed up!! Nearly the entire slum came and it took our staff and girls more than two hours of serving food! Maureen said that they were praying that God would multiply the food and He did!! Right before their eyes...there was even left over food to send home with people!

All of this was done for less than $200 American dollars!

Knowing that these precious children who patiently waited for hours to be served were going so sleep with full bellies is a tremendous blessing.

This school is run entirely by volunteers with no regular funding. The facility is in terrible condition.

    This is a bathroom:

We our excited to partner with this school and will be serving lunch quarterly. If you feel led to send a donation to this school, we would love to deliver it in your name.

    God still does miracles!

    Family Visitation Day

Our first Family Visitation Day went very well. Relatives who were able and willing, traveled to the maternity home to visit the girls. This will be a monthly occasion. They enjoyed a great lunch and also a class taught by Maureen, in an effort to rehabilitate the family unit.

The girls prepared all week for the visit and even had the choice to get their hair braided!

    Recruiting New Girls

    Despair. Hopelessness. Heartbreak.

For the last two weeks, Maureen and her staff have been visiting churches and schools in the various slums of Nairobi, interviewing girls to become residents of the maternity home.

The stories are all different. Yet all the same. They are all filled with unbelievable pain: Step-fathers forcing themselves on young, scared girls. Orphaned pregnant girls sleeping on the ground, scrounging for food because they've been kicked out of their house. And finding girls too late, suffering from the trauma of self-aborting, injuring themselves, then trying to commit suicide.

It's hard, hard work, filled with long, sorrowful hours for our staff. Please pray for them. We want to help every girl, every one. But we can only take those who fit our criteria as we have limited space and exist to take the most at-risk girls.

    Criteria:

    • at risk girls, orphaned and without a safe place to live
    • at risk for abortion, suicide
    • rape victims, forced prostitution
    • parental or guardian consent (not always easy)
    • and most important, the girls must want to come live in the maternity home (they are often scared and unsure)
We just added our fourth girl this week and will possibly be adding our fifth and sixth soon...please continue to pray.
Your commitment makes a huge difference!

    Now Collecting: Used Magazines

Send your old magazines to Kenya! Many of the products our residents make are from used magazines, posters, brochures, etc. We use local resources, but when we have a way to send these items over for free, it saves us money (since buying them in Africa can get expensive).

    Please mail to:

    Mercy House: Community Development

From the onset of planning and dreaming about building a maternity home in Africa, we have had community development in mind. While our vision is to help the most at-risk young, pregnant girls, we also want to help develop the community through abstinance education and simply being the hands and feet of Jesus.

We are still in the early stages, but we are excited to partner with a school in a nearby slum that offers free education to some of the poorest children. Our staff and board members will be providing quarterly meals and school supplies for more than 300 children. We are praying that we are able to do more as funds allow.

So, not only are you helping a few young girls in Kenya, you're giving hope (and needed nutrition/school supplies) to hundreds of young children.

With the current famine in the horn of Africa, our Executive Director, Maureen is calling her staff and fellow Kenyans to be a part of making a difference in this devestating famine. Please consider giving to relief organizations like this one to help end this epic crisis.

    Our First Baby

To every person who has mailed in donations, given money, prayed for and suppported this ministry, you are responsible for this:

On July 21, our first baby girl was born via emergency c-section. Mom (Quniter) is doing well and so is her precious daughter. Without a doubt, this birth would have ended much differently in the slums.

    (our three residents and Maureen)

Thank you for being a part of this miracle!

    New Store Coming Soon!

In July, our girls spent hours and hours learning how to turn recycled items like magazines and newspapers into jewelry, art and home decor. They are avid learners and very hard workers, producing some beautiful products!

We are hoping to not only offer the products here on the site, but also in local coffee shops, boutiques and fair trade market places all over the U.S. Once we have a steady flow of products, we plan on asking YOU to host home parties to help us sell the lovely items locally and spread the word about Mercy House!

Mercy House will buy each item from Rehema House at retail price (since we are a not-for-profit organization). 25% of every item sold will go into an account for the girl's future (to start their own business, attend college, etc) and the remaining 75% will be used for monthly expenses as a part of developing the home's sustainability. We are hoping the continued monthly giving from generous donors will offset the deficit of expenses as well as help buy land and eventually build a permanent home in the years to come.

So, get ready: The store will open soon!
