    An Average Day

Many have asked what a day looks like for our awesome girls.

Our maternity home is a home, a lot like yours. There is homework, fussy babies, chores, meal preparation and devotions.

We also have occasional visitors. Today, our sweet friend, Kimberly from Mattaw visited. Our girls practiced their English on her.

    Just look at these smiles!

    Here's a sample day:

    • Wake up/personal preparation and clean up
    • Morning Devotion
    • Homeschooling- 2 hours
    • Lunch prep/Lunch
    • Sewing/paper bead making
    • Porridge (traditional tea time)
    • Group counseling
    • Dinner prep/Dinner
    • Relaxation
    • Evening Devotion
    • Lights Out

    Transformation

When Sarah entered our maternity home, she didn't want to live. She was just a few months pregnant and although she was safe for the first time, she was overwhelmed with the thought of returning home to her abuser. She thought she and her unborn child might be better off dead.

She was depressed and under psychiatric care. It was a very challenging time.

But in the last six months, with pursuing love, patience and teaching she has been transformed by God. Her joy is contagious. She is always smiling, never complains.

Her new son, Myles was released yesterday with a clean bill of health after her emergency c-section two weeks ago. Sarah is already deeply in love with this child and we marvel at the difference in her.

    To God be the glory!

Your faithful financial support helped us pay her nearly $3000 medical bill. Thank you for caring and for being a part of this miracle.

    God Provides Another Miracle

What began as a normal weekly checkup, turned into an emergency with Sarah, our fifth girl to come into our home. She was admitted for monitoring and the doctors diagnosed her unborn baby with dangerous fetal tachycardia. Sarah had an emergency c-section and her baby's compromised cord was causing major fetal distress.

Sarah is joy. Her contagious smile and kind spirit has won the affection of the hospital staff.

    Her Jesus shines brightly.

Her tiny son was born alive.

One can only imagine this ending would be much different had Sarah still lived in the desolate, abusive conditions Maureen found her in.

Please pray for her baby boy. He is small, but fighting to breathe well. Pray for Sarah's new-mother heart.

    Three New Girls

Each of our seven girls have a unique story. Some have been violently raped, others have been forced into prostitution for food. And some of our girls made poor decisions and considered abortion as the solution. They are all shocking to hear and we never get accustomed to the pain of these young girls. We live in a broken world.

Their stories are different, but the hopelessness and despair is the same.

We are thankful that our God is the Rescuer, the Healer.

Our three newest girls: Lucy, Elizabeth and Violet have some of the most traumatic situations we've seen yet. Just their presence in our home is a miracle! Getting them admitted into the safe haven of the maternity home is the first of many. They have many, many hurdles ahead of them. We are asking God for total transformation of their minds, hearts and bodies.

We hope you'll join us in praying and believing for this.

Lucy, 16 is due in April (holding our firstborn Mercy House baby, now six months old!)

    Elizabeth, 17, due in May

Violet, unsure of age, due in May

Violet was released directly from a 3 month stay in a Kenyan hospital Burn Unit. Thankfully, she and her baby survived the attack. She is an orphan without a home and we are now her family. We will be sharing more about her story in the future, as she is under weekly medical care and will be needing surgeries in the future. We are believing God to help us pay for all of her medical needs.

So, that makes 7 girls (4 pregnant) and 3 babies...our food budget just doubled as did our medical expenses (medicines for conditions a couple of the girls have). Thank you for your constant, faithful giving. It's making a big difference!

    Welcome to our new girls!

    Our Girls: Freedom of Choice

Our dream is that every resident of the maternity home will be completely transformed by Christ. We work hard at developing each girl holistically through counseling, education, relationship, teaching, discipleship and so much more. We offer them a home, opportunity and a future, but only God can rescue their damaged hearts.

You might think living in the maternity home would be easy: 3 nutritious meals a day, free schooling, learning skills that will provide a future, sisters and staff that are like family. But it's hard. As a matter of fact, the girls are challenged and stretched and while their physical needs are met, they are dealing with emotional wounds we cannot imagine.

Transformation isn't easy. It's contrary to slum life, although tragically hard, girls live for the day and in their limited understanding, experience "freedom" in their extreme poverty.

At Rehema House, we offer them so much, but we cannot force them to receive it.

While each of our girls have professed Christ, they are new Christians and the pull of the world is very strong.

We are so sad to announce that Felistas, our youngest and newest mother, decided to leave our home upon the negative influence of distant relatives. We will do anything to help these precious girls, but we will not force them to stay and receive help. They must desire transformation.

Felistas comes from a background, deeply involved in witchcraft and severe abuse. And while her decision baffles us, we know that there is an enemy waging for her soul. There are many unspoken details in this situation, but please, pray for her and her 3 week old baby, Emmanuel.

Pray for our girls and our staff as they grieve the loss of their sister. We ask God for wisdom and we submit to Him, knowing that He loves this precious child and her baby more than we do.

Proud Owners of a Chicken Coop

A very nice American family living and working in Kenya emailed asking about a service project for their sons over the holidays.

We love receiving these kind of emails: Mercy House is about families.

We suggested helping clean up the grounds, but they didn't stop there. They asked Maureen what needed to be done. She told them a generous donor had just sent money for a chicken coop and she needed to hire someone to build it.

This kind family offered to build it themselves! Maureen ordered the supplies and we're able to use the extra money for other needs.

They did an amazing job and we're looking forward to fresh eggs! This is also a great opportunity to teach our girls about raising poultry.

We were blessed to be served by this generous family. God cares about the little things!

A Merry Christmas at the Maternity Home

Our girls and staff celebrated Christmas and most of them experienced many firsts!

Many Kenyans don't have money for Christmas gifts and a tree is a luxury. Our girls and staff were blessed with that and more! Each girl received a necklace that says "You are Loved" and a new pair of shoes. Our staff members each got a Christmas bonus.

Besides opening their first Christmas gifts, they also visited the hospital that cares for our girls and babies and they delivered delicious goodies.

Maureen's mom and brothers spent the day celebrating with them. (Our first born baby):

It was the beginning of many wonderful traditions!

    Merry Christmas

    Merry Christmas from Mercy House!

A word from Maureen, Executive Director in Kenya:

"...Your support has been of great help to us whether you took part in praying, encouraging, volunteering, finances, donating materials, purchasing the girls products, brainstorming and so on you are highly appreciated by me. For sure am so humbled to write you this thank you letter, all that is written here is from deep inside my heart, I cannot afford to pay back all that you have offered to us but I send you a sincere gratitude, my love, tears of joy and endless prayers.

I want to assure you that your support has not been in vain, I can certainly prove that your finances are being used the best way to support the girls, your material donations also went to the right people the babies and their mothers, your prayers have been answered God’s grace has been sufficient to us , He has fulfilled the desires of our hearts that we had requested for this year and His blessings are overflowing in Rehema House, this far the Lord has brought us He has been an Ebenezer in our lives, the girls faces are filled with happiness you can easily note the difference between now and when we first met them, they are growing holistically every day and oh my the babies are so cute and precious when I look at and hold them I cannot control tears flowing because they are a blessing and gift in my life. All this is because you decided to sacrifice a lot for Rehema House, you are part of the vision as together we are making a dream come true. Alone we could not make it but together with the help of God we are restoring HOPE to the hopeless and MAKING CHRIST KNOWN IN THE LIVES OF THE GIRLS who will in turn pass it on to their babies, families, friends, community and the whole nation.."

May He be with you this Season!
